ABOUT SEYDINA INSA WADE
“XALIMA” pronounced (halima) by the Senegalese singer/songwriter SEYDINA INSA WADE (Saydeena ansa Wad) is the first release from STARGAZER RECORDS, a brand new label based in Enniskillen Northern Ireland specializing in Irish and West African, mainly Senegalese music.
Recorded in Paris and Dakar, this is an album brim full of vibrant musical colours and exceptional energy. Seydina Insa Wade`s songs are charming musical portraits of Senegalese life, sung with humour and style. His is one of the great voices of modern Senegalese music and on this CD he collaborates with musicians who match his musical abilities and temperament.
Twenty years on from their first performances (together with percussionist Idrissa Diop) in the ground breaking acoustic trio TABALA, Seydina is reunited with ace guitarist Oumar Sow on the tracks “Xalima” and “Waliyu”. Seydina is also joined by two fellow members of the seminal Senegalese group Xalam II who were based in Paris during the 1980s and whose thrilling blend of Afro-Jazz is a significant chapter in the story of modern Senegalese music. Souleymane Faye is guest singer on the track “Samme” and Jean Philippe Rykiel plays keyboards on several tracks including “So Beugue” and “Libaas”. Jean Philippe will be well known to African music fans for his arrangements on Salif Keita’s classic album “Soro”. Other guests include the Dakar based brothers, Les Frères Guissé the Parisian cellist Hélène Billard and the noted composer and keyboard wizard, Frédérick Rousseau whose collaborations with Vangelis and Jean Michel Jarre have made him a household name in France.
A companion documentary film by Senegalese director Ousmane William Mbaye also entitled “Xalima – The Pen” follows the making of this CD in Dakar and affords Seydina Insa Wade the opportunity to introduce the places and people who have influenced his music. This won second prize in the documentary section at the Milan Film Festival on 28 March 2004.
From the mbalax rhythms of “Mag du Caaxaan” to the dance grooves of “Ginkgo Biloba”, Seydina Insa Wade moves with the times to create memorable tunes and audacious arrangements which assure him his rightful place in the galaxy of contemporary Senegalese stars.
